Ben thanks for getting an episode out right when I was craving it in spite of so much you had to deal with this week. You do a great thing and I’m so happy you’re back! MU is the best thing ever and season 2 is a delight so far. Thanks so much. Cheers.

Never stop doing what you do.

Are tripods prohibitively expensive in Ireland? If they were expecting some action why not try to get a little closer. Time to listen to the episode, thanks guys.

You can even see the bird taking off in that “Torpedo” excerpt. West of Ireland Lakes always have families of Swans on them, and that is exactly how they take off. Long, low take off, and then swooping off to one side. Watch to the end of the “Torpedo” and you can see the the dark spot rise into the sky.

After the episode went out I went back and watched this video a few more times. I'm now not entirely convinced that the wake is created by the bird.

There is no doubt in my mind that there is a bird taking off, but it almost looks as if the wake is “following” the bird. The bird then may take off after the wake changes direction.

Downes and others from the CFZ are still debating what exactly is happening in the video. Downes himself said:

“I have to admit that the more I look at the video I think that you are partly right. The black dot does appear to be a bird, but the more I examine both the video (at as high resolution as possible) and the photographs that my darling Corinna took, the `torpedo` wake seems to be following the bird rather than being made by it. The bird is actually a `red herring` (if I may mix my metaphors into a gloriously surrealchemical game of verbal exquisite corpse), because the `torpedo wake` bears off to the right as the bird (probably a cormorant or a grotesque shag) flaps on its merry way. Maybe whatever it was in the water was chasing the bird?”

I agree Ben, there is something more than a bird taking off here. Additionally, a bird taking of doesn't generate the sub-surface tension that is occurring here. That wave pattern is definitely coming from under not on top of the water.

It's really not an unusual sight to see Swans taking off like this here in Ireland. As an example, watch this footage of a pair of Mute Swans taking off. The almost “run” across the water, which would explain the trail in your video, and before taking off, they take a couple of long skips, which would explain the white splash at the end of the “Torpedo” A pair of Swans taking off like this could easily explain the effect seen in this video. A family of Swans, with young splashing about in readiness for first flight would also explain the swirling “eddies” and “squals” seen preceding the event. The second video shows swans taking off in slow motion. The third link, is a link to Killarney National park

Mute Swans nest on large mounds that they build with waterside vegetation in shallow water on islands in the middle or at the very edge of a lake. They are monogamous and often reuse the same nest each year, restoring or rebuilding it as needed. Male and female swans share the care of the nest, and once the cygnets are fledged it is not uncommon to see whole families looking for food.

Way to void that MacBook Pro warranty chap. ;o)

By the way, it's called a Bug Out Bag over here (and in the States). It should have enough to keep you going for about 72 hours. It's not about fearing a New World Order takeover, it's about independence and taking control of your life.

Shoot The Camera Man……WTF? if it was a monster in the lake he sure as hell wouldn't have captured it on film. Every time he started to film something he would cut away to nothing. Like when the two things were swimming for the shore, just before they got there he turned away. The thing that was hauling ass, he didn't follow it. UGHHHUGG!!

@ Benjamen, It looked like MAHHHHHHHHS!! classic

Great show as always Ben. Loved the tunes 2.

Great flashback to the past with the solo effort in this episode Ben. Thanks.

It is so nice to have Mysterious Universe back!!!! I just wanted to let you know that the woman who got pregnant while she was already pregnant is not as rare as you think. I have been surprised by all the media attention given to this woman. This “condition” runs in my family. My Aunt had a set of twins this way, her daughter (one of the twins) also had twins this way and my sister also had twins that were a couple of weeks apart. Unfortunately, she had problems with the pregnancy and the younger of the two didn't survive.

I have been looking for a while at this video and I am beginning to wonder if it could be one of those duck diving birds, going for fish.

The lake is very dark, and the fluroecent bubbles and the magnification of the water could be giving us the impression that it is larger than it actually is.

The fluroecent bubbles leaving a trail in the wake of the fish swimming away.

It would be cool if it was a giant eel though.

I finally figured out the difference between Ben as a solo host, and Ben as a co-host with Aaron…

when Ben is on his own, it is like he is talking to the listener, direct. When Ben and Aaron are together, it is like you are sitting in on a coffee session with some friends.

both variation on the MU theme are great. But I did find myself thinking something was missing this last episode. Shows how well Aaron has integrated into the MU sphere :-)

Thanks for another episode Ben and I look forward to the next one with you and Aaron.

Giant Eels could be a possibility. He made a very good point about the relative sizes and all. You have to consider the size in this case. What else could it be in this small lake?

  • http://twitter.com/onomaly Onomaly Software

While we do post on a few other sites, MU is by far our fav. We were big fans of the show before we started the company. Cheers.

  • jh

I love the show and im always fascinated by the content.

I HAVE to make a comment about the giant eel thing. What seems more likely? An enormous twenty foot long albino eel chasing a bird underwater as it takes off, or the wake of a bird skipping across the lake? I have to be sceptic on this one im afraid.

Keep up the great work on the show guys. Im loving every second

  • anthonyjohn

that is a total bird..you can track it flying off..the lil black thing..the rest…maybe birds paddling by?…cause the 2 or how ever many that sorta head towards shore could possibly just be birds getting to land …they already have a belief of what it is so its implanted in their heads therefor when they see ''evidence'' automatically its gotta be giant eels

    Irish “Lake Monster” 2009

It is a bird. The bird dives into the water. Leaves a splash and a mass of air bubbles in its wake under the water. The large shapes moving underneath the water are schools of fish.

The man in the video is deluded by a long life of looking for these things that he eventually “found them”.

    I agree with anthonyjohn

  • http://www.youngausskeptics.com/ Skelliot

Also, the shapes in the water could also be wind disturbing certain sections of the water. If you ever go boating you will see a good example of this when wind stirs up the water a distance from the boat.

  • Rimas

    music is goooood…thank you!

This was a great episode. I found the story about the woman who had been abducted all her life to be particularly intriguing. Her idea about what was happening to her towards the end (the idea that it was actually humans from the past abducting her in an attempt to save themselves) was eerily similar to the plot of an old independent sci-fi film I had seen very recently. It's called “La Jetée,” and I would definitely recommend checking it out. Here is a link to the film on google video:

Also, in case anyone else was trying to find the original article on endlessjrny.blogspot.com, I noticed that it seems to have been removed. I was however able to pull up the cached version from Google, which can be found here:
