The Chinese Communist Party often relies on the modern skylines of Beijing and Shanghai to show off their “progress” to the west. What they don’t show however are areas that lack some of the basic buildings essential to the community, schools for example.

In 1994, the residents of the Miao Village, in China’s Guizhou province, took matters into their own hands and constructed a school.

They certainly picked an interesting spot.

VERY COOL I WISH I WENT TO THIS SCHOOL
  • Dear China, is everything cool? You guys doing okay? Because I hear there's kids going to school in caves and all of that. Love, Jim.

Cynicism aside, they've actually got a pretty cool little setup in there. It's pretty bizarre and yet amazing. Like something out of a story book.
  • That's Chinese ingenuity for you. See a need and fill it ! Great stuff.
  • Yup ... my first thought too was ooh little lamplight..lol

Is this a story that's 15 years old?

Wow, that place is beautiful... It's amazing what they've been able to do in there!

The Miao tend to get the short end of the stick in modern China. They're an interesting cultural group in that they make the best of almost any situation and simply keep moving on.

That cave school is absolutely awesome. My first thoughts were how much it looks like some kind of versus level for a first person shooter.

Wow, that cave is huge! I wonder how large the cave system is out there. Why build a school when you have a cave!

I was TOTALLY thinking Little Lamplight! I think that's really awesome. I wonder why they decided a cave was the best place?
