300 million year old metal tools, and sandled footprints on top of extinct arthropods are just the tip of the iceberg.

Maybe the stronger memories in meth rats has to do with adrenaline.

Adrenaline makes memories stronger. It's an evolutionary adaptation, part of the fight-or-flight response. If you're full of adrenaline, your body figures it's pretty important to remember how you got into such a dangerous situation, and how you get out of it.

That's why propranolol (which blocks adrenaline) helps relieve post-traumatic stress syndrome, when administered shortly after a traumatic event. Blocking the adrenaline weakens the memory.

Now I've never done meth, but if it's as strong a stimulant as I hear it is, maybe it simulates the fight-or-flight response and fills the body with adrenaline (or the snail equivalent), which strengthens memory.

(Actually this story gave me a great idea for a blog post, about a related phenomenon I learned about at school, which I've never heard explained.)
