The thing I always wondered on the hatman. Is the hat really a hat (ie. removable), or physically part of the shadow. Is the hatman a separate race of shadowmen, or are they all one and the same shape, with the hat representing something else.

As an example, hammerhead sharks are sharks, but have the fleshy “hammer” shape on them. They’re physically that way, and you won’t have another shark put on the “hammer” to become a hammerhead.

I’ve seen the “hatman” once, before I’d ever heard any stories of shadow people before. In fact, searching for a story describing something similar to what I’d seen led me to discover that lots of people have seen these things. In 2001, I was 14 and staying in a college dorm over the summer for academic camp. My roommate and I were putting on makeup, facing the mirror which was placed on the door. Right across from the door was the one window in the room, which was the only source of light as it was the morning and we didn’t need the florescent light on. Suddenly, the light in the room went out for a second and we both turned around at the same time to see why the SUNLIGHT had “gone out”. Then we saw, walking out of the right wall corner, a pitch black man with a fedora-type hat and some type of boots on. He walked right across the wall til he got to the window, and then it stopped in front of the window, once again blocking out the sun. He totally blocked it out except for the light streaming in around the areas his body didn’t cover. The figure then did a quick “wave” as us with his hand and tipped his hat, and then proceeded to walk across the wall again until he disappeared, slipped, into the left wall corner. At that point me and my roommate screamed bloody murder and ran out of the room as fast as possible, collapsed in the hall, and cried. This whole incident lasted less than 30 seconds, I’m sure, but it felt like I was paralyzed with fear for minutes watching that thing. The entire building came to our floor to see what had happened, that’s how terrified we were and how loud we were screaming. So to answer your question, I think it’s “removable”, or movable, because I saw it move when he tipped the hat.

My theory on the hat is that it’s used to intimidate or up the fear factor. The overwhelming sense I got from the being or figure was that it was trying to scare us and it fed off of fear, and something about it wearing a hat seemed to make it much creepier, like “what the hell is that, and why is it wearing a HAT?”. Many other incidents happened on our hall preceding our sighting of the figure, and there is much more to the story that leads me to believe that everything the being, figure, entity, did was driven by scaring the crap out of us.
