The Hairy Hands Horror

Nov 11th in Ghosts & Hauntings by

It was around the year 1910 that a weird and horrific saga began – on what is today the B3212 road, which can be found in the vicinity of the Dartmoor, England locales of Postbridge and Two Bridges. It became known as the mystery of the Hairy Hands. Somewhat disturbingly, a hairy, monstrous and unknown force would time and again violently lash out at unwary passing drivers, and which, in one case, reportedly even resulted in a tragic death for an unfortunate road-user.

In most of the cases, the victims of the frightening phenomenon reported seeing large, hairy, “disembodied hands” manifest out of thin air, firmly grabbing the steering wheel of their vehicles – or the handle-bars of their bikes – and unsurprisingly striking complete terror into their hearts; something which invariably resulted in them being violently forced off the country road. For a decade or so, the events were considered nothing more than a mild – albeit certainly sinister – curiosity for the superstitious locals of the Dartmoor wilderness. That situation would drastically change in 1921, however, when tragedy struck.

Lurking Lions and Phantom Panthers: The ABCs of Alien Big Cat Sightings

Nov 8th in Cryptozoology & Featured by

The larger members of our planet’s feline population, including lions, tigers, panthers, and the like, aren’t quite what most would call cryptozoological wonders. However, the propensity for these animals to turn up in the least likely places has garnered a lot of attention over the years, leading to the classification of an entirely different cryptozoological sub-category within the realm of “out of place animals”: these are known as Alien Big Cats.

As a researcher of a variety of different kinds of strange phenomenon, I’ve come across my fair share of these sorts of stories over the years. Additionally, Dakota Waddell, one of our Field Correspondents with The Gralien Report, has made the study of such out-of-place-animal reports his primary focus as a researcher of strange phenomenon, occasionally joining us on the program with details of such encounters. Indeed, there are a number of strange stories involving these beasts that Waddell has managed to collect over the years, and at least one of these fell a bit closer to home than the others; his own father had been the witness to a strange encounter with what could only be called a “black panther” a number of years ago.

Man or Mutant: Is Human Language the Product of Bizarre Mutation?

Nov 7th in Ancient Mysteries & Cryptozoology by

It has long been speculated by linguists, historians and anthropologists alike what circumstances might have led to the use of language by early humans. In fact, considering the subtleties interwoven into our culture through the use of symbolism, it might be argued that the manifestation of abstract thought itself, and the eventual human intelligence that would form around it, could be directly attributed to the use of vocalizations; the same could be argued for the later implementation of written language as well.

Regardless of what effects language may have had on us as a species over time, it is less easy to discern exactly how the use of language came about to begin with. The theories for this are as wide and varied as the many dialects and varieties spoken throughout the nations of the world… and some of them get into the territory of the downright weird, too.

Chasing the Dragon

Nov 7th in Cryptozoology by

For three years Richard Freeman worked as Head of Reptiles at Twycross Zoo, England and, today, is the Zoological Director of one of the world’s premier cryptozoological investigation groups: namely, the Center for Fortean Zoology. And while Freeman has a passion for all aspects of cryptozoolgy, it is the dragon that fascinates him most of all.

“I started my career as a zoologist – so I had a grounded training,” says Freeman. “But cryptozoology was my passion. Now, I have had a particular passion – an obsession, I suppose – for years with dragons. But there was something that always puzzled me: no-one had ever thought, for more than a hundred years, to publish a definitive, non-fiction book on the subject. And as I am a qualified zoologist, I thought: why not me?”

Why not, indeed? In fact, that is precisely what Freeman has done in his book, Dragons: More Than A Myth?

I asked Freeman about his theories and discoveries with regard to dragons. He replied: “Well, that’s a bit difficult to answer because there are several things going on. It’s important to note that I’ve traveled the world pursuing these creatures – the Gambia, Mongolia, Thailand, and right here in England with some of the old legends from past centuries. And of one thing I can be certain: there isn’t just one answer to the question of what dragons are or what they may be.”

Freeman continued: “There are many creatures that have become linked to the lore and legend of what today we perceive and view as dragons, and some of these creatures are distinctly different to each other. But that should not take away from the fact that dragons are a real phenomenon.”

On this latter point, Freeman elaborates: “I am absolutely certain, having reviewed many ancient reports of dragon activity, that many sightings – perhaps two or three hundred years ago and probably further back – were genuine encounters, but where the witnesses were seeing what I believe to have been huge snakes, giant crocodiles, and the Australian ‘monster lizard’ Megalania.”
