Are UFO Sightings Really on the Rise?

Sep 28th in UFO Phenomenon by

In recent weeks, a number of experts have claimed that sightings of strange objects and unidentified aircraft in the skies are on the rise. In fact, some have even warned that an extraterrestrial invasion of Earth may in fact be imminent.

The recent spike in apparent sightings of UFOs in our skies has become an object of interest in a variety of areas, especially following statements issued last week by Clifford Clift, an international director with the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON), a UFO tracking organization. Even noted skeptic Benjamin Radford discussed the apparent rise in sightings in a Fox News editorial last week, noting the psychological and social explanations for why a rise in reports might be occurring.

Whether or not this proves that aliens from space are really about to invade, when it comes to the study of UFOs, even the notion of their being “more sightings” at one given time as opposed to another could be somewhat misleading. This is due to the fact that, while there may indeed be more sightings taking place, this doesn’t necessarily mean that UFOs are visiting Earth or appearing in greater numbers.

Unidentified Flying Objects, more commonly known as “UFOs” since the mid 1950s, have long held the fascination of the public. This subject has been taken to task and examined not only by a variety of government agencies, but also by a host of civilian groups over the years. These range from the U.S. Air Force’s Project Bluebook; to the civilian NICAP group’s early scientific attempts as an investigative organization studying the phenomenon; to the modern Mutual UFO Network, which compiles vast databases pertaining to the study of the phenomenon.

Fantastic Flying Folk!

Sep 26th in Bizarre & Featured by

Certainly, one of the most mystifying aspects of the strange realm of Forteana is that relative to sightings of flying humanoids. Now, when I say that, I’m specifically not talking about vaguely human-like forms that seem far more monstrous in nature – like the famous Mothman of Point Pleasant, West Virginia, or its transatlantic English cousin, Owlman. Rather, I’m referring to sightings of literal, flying people. Sounds strange? Of course it does! But, that doesn’t take away the fact that such “things” have been seen for centuries – and continue to be seen, too.

A winged man was reportedly seen flying over Coney Island, Brooklyn on a fateful day in the late 1800s. Soaring across the sky towards the New Jersey coast, the flier, said witnesses – in memorable tones – wore on his face a “cruel and determined expression.”

And from forty-plus years ago, comes an absolute classic.

It was a warm summer’s evening in 1969 and Earl Morrison, a private with the U.S. Marine Corps, was stationed in Vietnam, sitting with two friends atop a bunker situated near to Da Nang, a port city which can be found on the coast of the South China Sea, at the mouth of the Han River. For reasons that Morrison and his friends could never really fathom, they all looked up, near-simultaneously, and, to their jaw-dropping astonishment, saw a strange figure crossing the night sky – and it was slowly coming in their direction.

Crypto-Economics: Canadian Coins Boast Colorful Cryptid Creatures

Sep 23rd in Cryptozoology by

Whoever may have told us that there was no money in the study of cryptozoology has officially been proven wrong. This is especially the case in Canada, since an artist was recently procured in the design of several famous Canadian Cryptids and their likenesses, which will be appearing on a number of special edition Canadian coins.

The colorful images adorn the backs of Canadian 25 cent pieces, and depict two varieties of aquatic cryptids, the Nessie-like saurian Memphre’, said to inhabit the depths of Lake Memphremagog, and the water-cat known as Mishepishu, which according to native legends, inhabits the waters of Lake Superior and nearby areas. However, they are only the most recent of an ongoing batch of Crypto-coins, as the image above will already indicate… arguably, one of our favorite Canadian cryptids has already graced the country’s currency with its elusive presence.

The Island Monster

Sep 21st in Cryptozoology by

Since at least the mid-1990s, dark and sinister stories have surfaced from the forests and lowlands of Puerto Rico that tell of a strange creature roaming the landscape, while striking overwhelming terror into the hearts of the populace – which is not surprising since the animal is sometimes described as having a pair of glowing red eyes, powerful, claw-like hands, razor-sharp teeth, a body not unlike that a monkey, and very occasionally even large and leathery bat-like wings. And if that were not enough, the beast is said to feed on the blood of the local animal population. Puerto Rico has a monstrous vampire in its midst. Its legendary name is the Chupacabra.

I have been to Puerto Rico on a number of occasions, and I can say for certain that theories absolutely abound with respect to the true nature of the animal. Some researchers and witnesses suggest that the beast is some form of giant-bat. Others prefer the rumor that it had extraterrestrial origins. While the most bizarre idea postulated is that the Chupacabra is the creation of a Top Secret genetic-research lab hidden deep within Puerto Rico’s El Yunque National Forest. And, of course, there are those who think the whole thing is nonsense – a phenomenon borne purely out of a combination of mistaken identity, hoaxing, mythology and folklore.

Is Nicolas Cage Really a Vampire?

Sep 21st in Bizarre & Modern Mysteries by

The answer, of course, is no… well, probably not. For one thing he seems to be aging right before our eyes and for another he has never exhibited an inability to consume solid food, nor any signs of heliophobia for that matter. Nevertheless one e-Bay seller insists that he has unearthed a Civil War era photograph that proves that the ubiquitous actor was alive (or undead, as the case may be) way back in the 1870s.

The owner of the admittedly eerie photograph is an antiques dealer from Bristol, Tennessee, by the name of Jack Mord — which, in and of itself, sounds a bit creepy, like an old Mad Magazine spoof of Jack Lord that would come out around Halloween time. Regardless of his appellation, Mord claimed that he stumbled across the strange picture in back of an old photo album that was allegedly: “filled with an unusual number of Civil War death portraits.
