The CEO of Tesla Motors, and the same guy who said that artificial intelligence was going to ruin mankind, Elon Musk, is now opening up a gym to train robots, according to Computer World. In fact, this is what he said about how artificial intelligence was going to ruin us all, about a year and a half ago,
I think we should be very careful about artificial intelligence. If I were to guess about what our biggest existential threat is, it’s probably that…with artificial intelligence, we are summoning the demon. In all those stories with the guy with the pentagram and the holy water, and he’s sure he can control the demon, it doesn’t work out.
He said the above not too long ago and now he wants to open up a training gym for your robots. This gym will help programmers to train their robots to be smarter and make devices smarter. Not only will it have simulated robots but it will also have Atari games. It will also include a place just for comparing and reproducing the results that programmers come up with.
The robot training gym is called, “Open AI” and is meant to be a tool for the programmers to teach their machines to learn better. In other words, it is a tool meant to make smart machines even smarter.
Although Musk had warned us all a while back about robots being the end of us, he actually needs this Open AI gym for his own business. This is because he runs the smartest cars in the world that are made by Tesla Motors and drive us around instead of us having to drive. These autopilot featured smart cars were designed to get smarter and learn as we teach them. Because of this, he actually needs this gym for his business too.
Open AI gym was built for programmers to reinforce what their robots already know and to make them even smarter than they are now. The learning in the gym involves motor control and decision making for robots.
All of this might sound good and maybe a little scary to some of us but with something like this also comes challenges. The two challenges that Open AI faces are the need for better benchmarks and a lack of a standard environment. However, Musk does hope that the gym will address and fix both of these issues soon.
