One way to call attention to a UFO sighting or alien encounter is to compare it to Roswell – the still unresolved incident in July of 1947 that was said to involve a crashed spaceship, extraterrestrial beings and a government cover-up. That is the case with an alleged UFO and aliens incident in 1996 in Varginha, Brazil, which has since become known “Brazil’s Roswell.” Of all of the Roswell wannabes, this one seems to come the closest because it had all three of the Roswell components plus worldwide media coverage. Interest in the Varginha incident has come and gone over the years as new ‘evidence’ and testimonies appear, but it is still, like the Roswell incident, unresolved. It is back in the news recently because of a new documentary which revisits the town, many of the eyewitnesses, experts and government officials. Prior to the release of “Moment of Contact” (trailer can be viewed here), filmmaker James Fox was interviewed on a Mysterious Universe podcast, where he revealed some of the new details he’s uncovered. Now that the documentary has been released, the mainstream media has picked up on it … and on a recent tweet in which James Fox announces a game-changing piece that could turn a certain incident in New Mexico into the Roswell Varginha.
“I’m told more details on photographic evidence coming very soon from those who’ve see it.”
In his tweet on October 28, James Fox (@jamescfox) -- English-born American-raised documentary filmmaker known for Pretty Slick (2016), UFOs: 50 Years of Denial? (1997) and The Phenomenon (2020) – is referring to an article on the same date in The New York Post which reports that Fox has even more information on the Varginha incident and, most importantly, on actual photographic evidence of alien beings. Fox was asked about an alleged 35-second video of an ET in a recent “Ask Me Anything” session on Reddit where he said:
“I have personally spoken to three witnesses in Brazil that claim to have seen photographic evidence — both video and stills.”
The New York Post and the Mysterious Universe podcast do excellent jobs of laying out the entire 1996 Varginha UFO incident for those who are unfamiliar with it. Briefly, many residents of the southeastern Brazilian town reported seeing a strange, cigar-shaped object, about the size of a school bus, slowly fall from the sky and crash in a field in January. Some witnesses claimed to have seen the actual wreckage, but the most famous were three young women who claimed to have seen a strange being about five feet tall with a large head, thin body, V-shaped feet, brown skin, and large red eyes. There have been stories since of the military isolating the site, hauling away the wreckage and the alien, and threatening witnesses to keep what they saw quiet. That last part obviously didn’t happen, but the incident has been stuck, like its Roswell counterpart, in rumors and government denials ever since. James Fox is not the first to make a film about the incident, but he has details that lend credence to the existence of proof.
“I saw a box, a stainless steel table with a box. There were doctors, people carrying clipboards, analyzing. It looked like they all seemed scared of it. And when I looked I saw something different — a different creature, with the skin very oily, a lot of oil, like silicone. Seeing that I got scared.”
That testimony given to Fox comes from what is described as an anonymous witness known only as “Military X” … the description “Military X” gave sounds just like a description given in a different interview in January 2022 by someone named Machado, who claimed he was a low-ranking junior soldier in January 1996 when he saw what sounds like an extraterrestrial, especially with Miliary X’s description of the being’s lower appendage.
“What caught my attention was the foot. It was like this [V-shaped] — practically two fingers. What led me to believe that it wasn’t a human being was the foot.”
That is similar to how the three women described the foot, although they thought it had three toes … it is hard to determine nearly 30 years later if this is real, coincidence or if “Military X” was influenced by their testimony. The New York Post also mentions testimony by a former Brazilian Air Force traffic controller whose memories of that day include two US Air Force helicopters landing in Varginha where they “collected something” unknow and vanished with it. That was corroborated by to local military and civilian witnesses, who told Fox that “the bodies and crash debris were appropriated by agents from the United States of America.” However, the photos and possible video footage is believed to still be in Brazil.
That brings us back to James Fox’s tweet on October 28. Has he heard something new about these items? He said in the Reddit “Ask me anything” session that “There will be details coming soon … very soon.” He also hinted that he had knowledge of who had seen them … and those people are high up in the U.S. government. When asked if this new evidence would be part of the next UFO report to Congress by the Pentagon’s new UFO department, Fox said this:
“Only behind the scenes. I’m told this film has already made the rounds on [Capitol Hill].”
The three young witnesses are interviewed again in the documentary and their stories have stayed consistent. Similarly, the government response to the incredible story has also stayed consistent – the military and firefighting trucks were in the area conducting routine maintenance operations, and the three women saw a homeless, mentally unstable man covered in mud who was known to the officials. What could change everything are the photos and the 35-second film of the “alien” or a homeless man.
All of this points out to one thing we can all agree on – the UFO incident in Varginha and the one in Roswell are both confusing and full of holes. Are those holes because of government cover-ups? Probably. Are they confusing because of misinterpretation by the witnesses? Also probable. Will the photos and film from Varginha be released? Who knows? If they ARE released, will they change everything? There is only one way to find out. We’ll be waiting … but not holding our breath.
