The Hopi End-time Prophecies: The Blue Star Kachina and the Return of the White Brother Pahana

The oral traditions of the Hopi tell us that we are currently living in the Fourth World. The three previous Worlds were destroyed due to global cataclysms when the people started living out of balance with spirit and nature, and forgot to sing praises to the Creator. The Fourth World, too, is destined to meet the same fate if it is consumed by evil and war.

When the Hopi had emerged into the Fourth World from their underground sanctuary, they made a sacred covenant with the Great Spirit, Masaw, – who is the caretaker of the Earth and the Lord of the Dead – to follow his life plan, and live peacefully as simple, humble farmers, taking care of the land and all its creatures. Masaw gave the Hopi sacred tablets outlining their life plan, and also told them of events that will come to pass when the Fourth World approaches its end.

Over the past few centuries, as the Hopi came under the onslaught of new occupiers who tried to erase their old ways of life and exploit their sacred land for commercial gains, they saw the signs mentioned in their prophecies come to fruition one by one. To them, the message was clear - we are approaching the end of the Fourth World and the Day of Purification. After the devastations of the Second World War, the Hopi - who normally prefer to remain aloof and reticent - felt the need to share their spiritual messages and the warnings from their prophecies with the wider world.

The Blue Star Kachina

One of the earliest accounts of the Hopi End-time prophecies was poignantly expressed by a Hopi elder called White Feather, which was published in a manuscript circulated amongst several Methodist and Presbyterian churches in 1959.[1] On a blistering hot summer day in 1958, a minister named David Young was driving along a highway in New Mexico, when he saw an elderly Indian walking along the road’s gravel shoulder. David stopped the car and offered him a ride to the next town. After a few minutes of silence, the elderly Indian introduced himelf as White Feather, a Hopi of the Bear Clan. White Feather told David Young of his adventures across the American continent, following the sacred paths of his people and visiting the holy altars. “From all these I have heard the stories of the past, and the prophecies of the future,” he said. “Today, many of the prophecies have turned to stories, and few are left - the past grows longer, and the future grows shorter.”

“And now White Feather is dying. His sons have all joined his ancestors, and soon he too shall be with them. But there is no one left, no one to recite and pass on the ancient wisdom to. My people have tired of the old ways - the great ceremonies that tell of our origins, of our Emergence into the Fourth World, are almost all abandoned, forgotten. Yet even this has been foretold. The time grows short.”

Evidently, White Feather was distraught by the lack of interest shown by the younger generation of Hopi people in following the ancient rituals and ceremonies. The allure of the materialistic society was inducing many Hopi youths to seek jobs in the urban areas, while those that remained were becoming victims of alchohol and drug abuse. One of the core beliefs of the Hopi is that their prayers and ceremonies play a vital role in holding world in balance; and if they are not performed, there are negative consequences. White Feather went on to say that, “the Fourth World will end soon, and the Fifth World will begin. This the elders everywhere know. The signs over many years have been fulfilled, and so few are left.”

White Feather then went on to tell David Young how the Hopi had prophecised many changes that will occur before the eventual dissolution of the Fourth World, and how, one by one, they were fulfilled. The First Sign was the “coming of the white-skinned men…who struck their enemies with thunder”. This refers to the arrival of the Europeans with their gunpowder. The Second Sign was the “coming of spinning wheels of wood filled with voices” i.e. the European settlers bringing their families in wagons. The Third Sign was about “a strange beast, like a buffalo, but with great long horns”, that will overtake the land – an obvious reference to the cattle brought by the new settlers. The Fourth Sign was that “the prairie will be crossed by snakes of iron”– the railway tracks! The Fifth Sign was that, “the land shall be criss-crossed by a giant spider’s web”, by which was meant the electric and telephone lines. The Sixth Sign was, “the land shall be criss-crossed by rivers of stone that makes pictures in the sun.” This refers to the concrete highways that create mirage-like effects under the scorching sun. White Feather then went on to describe the signs that were yet to be fulfilled.

“This is the Seventh Sign – and it is the first that is yet to come. You will hear of the sea turning black, and many living things dying because of it.

This is the Eighth Sign: You will see many youth, who will wear their hair long like my people, come and join the tribal nations, to learn of their ways and wisdom.

And this is the Ninth and Last Sign: You will hear of a dwelling-house in the heavens, above the earth, that shall fall with a great crash. It will appear as a Blue Star. Very soon after this the ceremonies of my people will ceaze.”

The Seventh and the Eighth Signs have been fulfilled already. The Seveth Sign refers to the catastrophic oil spills of the 1970s, while the Eighth Sign presages the hippie movement that began in the 1960s. So, we are now awaiting the fulfillment of the Ninth and final sign of the Hopi, before the Fourth World ends. On the face of it, it seems quite likely that the “Blue Star” that will “fall with a great crash” refers to a comet. Comets have historically been described as “hairy stars”. Moreover, a two-tailed comet has a long ion-tail that glows with a bluish colour due to the emission carbon monoxide ions. So, the final prophecy of White Feather seems to indicate that the end of the Fourth World will be brought about by a comet impact.

In the “Book of the Hopi”, Frank Waters presented additional information about the Blue Star, based on his conversations with nearly thirty elders of the Oraibi village. He wrote that,

“The end of all Hopi ceremonialism will come when a kachina removes his mask during a dance in the plaza before uninitiated children.”[2]

Now, the kachina are a large number of spirits (more than 300)  – representing ancestors, stars, planets, birds, animals, plants, mountains, clouds or invisible forces - who answer to the prayers of the Hopi and bestow blessings in the form of health, joy, rain and good harvest. It is said that, long ago, the spirits themselves came to the villages, but today the people have lost the ability to see them, so the Hopi impersonate these spirits during their dances by wearing costumes and sacred masks. The Hopi say that the person impersonating the kachina becomes imbued with the spirit of the kachina and loses his personal identity.

The Hopi give Kachina dolls to the children to make them aware of the different types of kachinas.

As per the prophecy, the kachina who will take off his mask during the dance in the plaza is the Blue Star kachina. Frank Waters writes,

“That time is not far off. It will come when the Saquasohul (Blue Star) kachina dances in the plaza. He represents a blue star, far off and yet invisible, which will make its appearance soon.”[3]

So, what the prophecy essentially tells us is that, the dance of the Blue Star kachina in the plaza will herald the appearance of the Blue Star i.e. a particularly brilliant comet. This will signal the beginning of a great war, which, the Hopi believe, will be “a spiritual conflict with material matters. Material matters will be destroyed by spiritual beings who will remain to create one world and one nation under one power, that of the Creator.”[4] Frank Water writes that, as per the prophecy,

“World War III will be started by those people who first received the light (the divine wisdom or intelligence) in the other old countries (India, China, Egypt, Palestine, Africa). The United States will be destroyed, land and people, by atomic bombs and radioactivity. Only the Hopis and the homeland will be preserved as an oasis to which refugees will flee.”[5]

In many ways, the flames of this great war may have already been ignited. The last two decades have seen an almost continuous wave of battles being waged by America and its allies against the countries of the Middle East and Northern Africa. And now the battlelines are shifting eastwards with the onset of the hostilities in Ukraine. There are fears that even China may also get drawn into a conflict against the western powers. If there is another World War, it will be fought with nuclear weapons, which can usher in a global holocaust.

It is interesting that the Hopi regarded the Blue Star Kachina as a portent of global conflicts. There was, in fact, a widely held belief in the ancient world that certain comets act as portents of war, by driving men into a state of madness and frenzy. In the Mahabharata, when a comet called Brahma-danda appeared in the skies above Dwaraka, a fatricidal war erupted between the Yadavas, in which all of them were killed. Similar beliefs were held by the Greco-Roman philosophers. Pliny wrote that, “the ceratias comet has the form of a horn, like the one that appeared when the Greeks fought the final battle at Samalmis”[6] (in 480 BCE). As per Manilius, a comet appeared during the plague that broke out during the war between Athens and Sparta in 430 BCE.[7]

White Feather told David Young much the same thing: that a global nuclear conflict will erupt soon after the Ninth Sign is fulfilled and the Blue Star makes its appearance in the skies. He said,

“These are the Signs that great destruction is coming. The world shall rock to and fro. The white man will battle against other people in other lands - with those who possessed the first light of wisdom. Terrible will be the result. There will be many columns of smoke and fire such as White Feather has seen the white man make in the deserts not far from here. Only those which come will cause disease and a great dying. Many of my people, understanding the prophecies, shall be safe. Those who stay and live in the places of my people shall also be safe. There will then be much to rebuild.

And soon - very soon afterward - Pahana will return. He shall bring with him the dawn of the Fifth World. He shall plant the seeds of his wisdom in their hearts. Even now the seeds are being planted. These shall smooth the way to the Emergence into the Fifth World.

But White Feather shall not see it. I am old and dying. You – perhaps you will see it.  In time, in time…”

The Hopi seem to believe that their villages will be safe and serve as sanctuaries for refugees during the war, which makes sense, for, during a war, the people most at risk are those who live in crowded cities. The “Ant People”, however, are not mentioned, which is a bit strange, since the Hopi had found shelter in the underground chambers of the Ant People when the First and Second Worlds were destroyed by Sotuknang. As per the prophecy, after the appearance of the Blue Star, and the beginning of a global war, something of great importance is scheduled to happen – that of the return of the lost white brother Pahana, who will herald the dawn of the Fifth World. The return of Pahana is a momentous event that the Hopi people have been waiting for a long time. In fact, his arrival is long overdue. When the Hopi had met the Spaniard Pedro de Tovar - the first white man they had ever seen - they welcomed him as Pahana. But when they saw that Tovar did not recognize the ancient Hopi customs, they realized their mistake and sent him away.

The question is, who is this lost white brother Pahana that the Hopi have been waiting for?

The White Brother Pahana

When the Hopi had emerged into the Fourth World, they were greeted by Masaw, the guardian spirit of the Earth, who told them how they were to complete their migrations, how they would recognize the places they were to settle in, and the manner in which they were to live. All of this was symbolically written down on four tablets and given to the Hopi. The tablet given to the Fire Clan was very small, made of dark-colored stone, with a piece broken off from one corner. Frank Waters writes that, as Masaw marked the tablet, he told them,

“After the Fire Clan had migrated to their permanent home, the time would come when they would be overcome by a strange people. They would be forced to develop their land and lives according to the dictates of a new ruler, or else they would be treated as criminals and punished. But they were not to resist. They were to wait for the person who would deliver them.

This person was their lost white brother Pahana, who would return to them with the missing corner piece of the tablet, deliver them from their persecutors, and work out with them a new and universal brotherhood of man. But warned Masaw, if their leader accepted any other religion, he must assent to having his head cut off.  This would dispel the evil and save his people. ”[8]

The Hopi Fire Clan tablet with a piece missing from one corner.

What we can gather from this is that, the lost white brother Pahana is someone who will return with the missing piece of the stone tablet given to the Fire Clan. He will deliver the people from oppression and sow the seeds of wisdom in order to to prepare the people for the Fifth World. But who was this saviour personality? And where was he coming from? Hopi oral legends, as documented by Frank Waters, tells us that,

“When they (Hopi) first had landed on this Fourth World, a certain person had been sent east to the rising sun. Upon reaching there, he was to erect a shrine and rest his forehead on the ground once. Then he was to return with the people of the rising sun and they would all become brothers again in the fulfillment of the universal plan…This lost white brother’s name was Pahana. When he left, a piece of the sacred tablet was broken off and given to him so that when he rejoined his brothers this piece would match the tablet it had been broken from and identify him as their brother.”[9]

It is still not clear from this who the white brother Pahana really was. We understand that he will return from the East, along with many people of the “rising sun”, free the Hopi people from persecution, and fulfill the plan of life given by Masaw. But was he one of the Hopi? Or was he a white man? If so, what was he doing in the midst of the Hopi to begin with? Did he catch the wrong boat at the end of the Third World? Besides, how would any normal person accomplish all that is expected of Pahana? Could it be that Pahana was actually a spirit being – a kachina, to be more specific – who will use his supernatural powers to restore peace and harmony?

Frank Waters mentions that the kachina had accompanied the Hopi during their migrations. “Indeed, they (Hopi) assert that kachinas came up with them during their Emergence from the womb of Mother Earth.”[10] The kachinas took the forms of ordinary people and gave help and guidance to the clans. They were commonly referred to as the Kachina Clan.[11] Afterwards, they went away to live on top of the San Francisco peaks to the west of Hopi-land, from where they responded to the prayers of the Hopi. Their place of origin, however, is supposed to be far, far away. Frank Waters writes, “Actually they come from much farther away, a long long way – from neighbouring stars, constellations, too distant to be visible, from mysterious spirit worlds.”[12]

Considering that the kachinas had accompanied the Hopi during their migrations, had passed on all manners of skills and esoteric wisdom to the Hopi people, and still respond to their prayers, it is quite likely that the white brother Pahana, who went towards the east, was actually a kachina – and a very powerful one at that - who was capable of bringing in the dawn of the Fifth World. The kachinas, in general, appear to correlate to the various classes of “underworld spirits” of other cultures who were associated with wisdom, fertility, healing and rainfall - the same spirits that the shaman encounters during his journey to the underworld in an altered state of consciousness. This would explain quite niclely why the kachinas had emerged from the underworld, along with the Hopi, at the beginning of the Fourth World.

Some more pertinent information about Pahana, which is aligned with this line of thinking, can be gleaned from the “The Hopi Message to the United Nations” in 1992.[13]

“It was to Spider Woman's two grandsons the sacred stone tablets were given. These two brothers were instructed to carry them to a place the Great Spirit had instructed them. The older brother was to go immediately to the east, to the rising sun and upon reaching his destination was instructed to immediately start to look for his younger brother who shall remain in the land of the Great Spirit. The older brother's mission when he returned was to help his younger brother (Hopi) bring about peace, brotherhood and everlasting life.

It is known that our True White Brother, when he comes, will be all powerful and will wear a red cap or red cloak. He will be large in population and belong to no religion but his very own. He will bring with him the sacred stone tablets. With him there will be two great ones, both very wise and powerful…The three will lay out a new life plan which leads to everlasting life and peace. The earth will become new as it was from the beginning. Flowers will bloom again, wild game will return to barren lands, and there will be abundance of food for all. Those who are saved will share everything equally and they all will recognize Great Spirit and speak one language.”

Now the air begins to clear up a little. The white brother Pahana was a grandson of Spider Woman, which definitely makes him a very powerful deity or kachina. The Spider Woman of the Hopi was the “Earth Goddess” -  the one who had created all life on Earth, and who nurtures and guides her children whenever they are in a spot of bother. She frequently appears in the company of Masaw, the caretaker of the Earth and the Lord of the Dead. Masaw and Spider Woman appear to be the Hopi counterpart of Osiris-Isis of the Egyptians, Enki-Ninhursag of the Sumerians and Yama-Yami of the Indians. As their grandson, Pahana must, therefore, be a very powerful deity or kachina, who will come from the east, dressed in red, accompanied by two powerful helpers and a large host, to exterminate evil, deliver people from oppression, renew and revitalize the Earth and inaugurate a new way of living in peace, harmony and brotherhood.

All of a sudden, Pahana no longer appears to be the lone white guy, carrying a piece of stone in his pocket, who got lost in the forests of Cambodia and is unable to find his way back home. Instead, he starts to resemble the eschatological Saviour figure, full of awe and majesty, described in so many ancient texts. He is the Son of Man of Christianity, the Kalki Avatar of the Hindus and the Rudra Chakrin of the Buddhists, who is prophesized to return with great power and glory from the heavens, riding a white horse, followed by a celestial army, in order to kill the evil ones, save the righteous, and establish the Kingdom of God on Earth. The fact that Pahana – a kachina, no less - will be dressed in red, also ties him to the prophecy of the Red Star Kachina which was elaborated by Dr. Robert Ghost Wolf.

The Red Star Kachina

A detailed version of the Hopi prophecy for the End-Times was presented by Dr. Robert Ghost Wolf in the book LAST CRY: Native American Prophecies & Tales of the End Times. Dr. Wolf has worked for many years with indigenous elders in both North and South America, many of whom have embraced him as a spiritual teacher and ceremonial leader in his own right. According to Dr. Wolf, the Day of Purification will finally be brought about by the Red Star Kachina, which will appear after many other events will come to pass. Here is an excerpt from his book:

“The story of the Blue Star Kachina is a very old story, very old. I have been aware of the story of the Blue Kachina since I was very young. I was told this story by grandfathers who are now between 80 and 108 years of age. Frank Waters also wrote about Saquasohul, the Blue Star Kachina in “The Book of the Hopi”, the story came from Grandfather Dan, Oldest Hopi...It was told to me that first the Blue Kachina would start to be seen at the dances, and would make his appearance known to the children in the plaza during the night dance. This event would tell us that the end times are very near. Then the Blue Star Kachina would physically appear in our heavens which would mean that we were in the end times...

In the Final days we will look up in our heavens and we will witness the return of the two brothers who helped create this world in the birthing time. Poganghoya is the guardian of our North Pole and his Brother Palongawhoya is the guardian of the South Pole…The twins will be seen in our North Western skies. They will come and visit to see who still remembered the original teachings, flying in their Patuwvotas, or flying shields. They will bring many of their star family with them in the final days…

The return of the Blue Star Kachina who is also known as Nan ga sohu will be the alarm clock that tells us of the new day and new way of life, a new world that is coming. This is where the changes will begin. They will start as fires that burn within us, and we will burn up with desires and conflict if we do not remember the original teachings, and return to the peaceful way of life…

Not far behind the twins will come the Purifier - The Red Kachina, who will bring the Day of Purification. On this day the Earth, her creatures and all life as we know it will change forever.  There will be messengers that will precede this coming of the Purifier. They will leave messages to those on Earth who remember the old ways…The messages will be found written in the living stone, through the sacred grains, and even the waters…The appearance of the twins begins a period of seven years which will be our final opportunity to change our ways…

When the Purifier comes we will see him first as a small Red Star which will come very close and sit in our heavens watching us. Watching us to see how well we have remembered the sacred teachings… This Purifier will show us many miraculous signs in our heavens. In this way we will know that the Creator is not a dream. Even those who do not feel their connection to spirit will see the face of creator across the sky. Things unseen will be felt very strongly…Many things will begin to occur that will not make sense, for reality will be shifting back in and out of the dream state... All living things will want to be present for this day when time ends, and we enter the forever cycle of the Fifth World…

Then one morning, in a moment, we will awaken to the Red Dawn. The sky will be the color of blood, many things will then begin to happen that right now we are not sure of their exact nature. For, much of reality will not be as it is now…

After a time we will again walk with our brothers from the Stars, and rebuild this Earth But not until the Purifier has left his mark upon the universe…Nothing living will go untouched, here or in the heavens. The way through this time it is said is to be found in our hearts, and reuniting with our spiritual self. Getting simple and returning to living with and upon the Earth and in harmony with her creatures. Remembering that we are the caretakers, the fire keepers of the Spirit. Our relatives from the Stars are coming home to see how well we have fared in our journey.”[14]

This prophecy is replete with intriguing symbolisms and extraordinary claims. Firstly, lets talk about the Red Star Kachina which is prophesized to appear around seven years after the appearance of the Blue Star Kachina. The Red Star will come very close to the Earth, and remain stationary in the sky for some time. It’s quite obvious from the description that the Red Star is also a comet, which appears reddish due to the emission of sodium ions. Sometimes a comet remains stationary over a particular area for a long time. For instance, Josephus, the 1st century CE historian, described a “star resembling a sword” i.e. a comet, that stood over the city of Jerusalem for a whole year in 66 CE, which foretold the disaster that was about to befall the Temple.[15]

The prophecy tells us that the energetic emanations from the Red Star will have major repercussions on our psyche and the nature of reality itself will appear to fluctuate, as the carefully curated reality bubble that modern civilization has built for itself begins to come apart at the seams. Ultimately, the end of Fourth World will be brought about by a fearsome cometary apocalypse. Incidentally, the Navajo people have also prophesized that a Nine-pointed Star – which is most likely a comet with nine tails - will come from the East and unify all races and nations. It is quite clear that the Red Star Kachina is, indeed, the white brother Pahana who is expected to arrive from the east, dressed in red. Since the Hopi claim that Pahana will be accompanied by a large host, in addition to two powerful helpers, the Red Star may actually be a part of a large comet swarm.

Dr. Robert Wolf writes that, that the Blue Star Kachina will be accompanied by the twins, who will come flying in their patuwvotas, or flying shields, and they will bring many of their star family with them. This sounds like a veritable UFO invasion! Of course, the Hopi are not reticent about their beliefs in UFOs and extraterrestrials. Far from it, actually. The Hopi say that their ancestors were star people who came from the Pleiades – a place they call Chuhukon i.e. “those who cling together”.[16] Likewise, early Dakota legends speak of the Pleiades, or Tiyami, as the abode of the ancestors. One of the Hopi elders who was quite vocal about his beliefs in UFOs was the late Chief Dan Katchongva of the Hopi Sun Clan. While explaining to The Daily Courier an ancient petroglyph near the village of Mishongnovi in Second Mesa, that depicts a dome-shaped object, he said, “The arrow on which the dome-shaped object rests, stands for travel through space. The Hopi maiden on the dome-shape (drawing) represents purity. Those Hopi who survive Purification Day will travel to other planets. We, the faithful Hopi, have seen the ships and know they are true.”[17]

As per the prophecy of Dr.Wolf, the arrival of the Red Star Kachina and the Day of Purification will not happen abruptly, and many messengers will arrive beforehand to make us aware of this “Shift in the Ages”, so that we get a chance to mend our ways. The messages will appear everywhere – on the soil, water, rocks, crops etc. – so that it becomes increasingly difficult for us to ignore them. The Crop Circle phenomenon, which has been going on unabated for the past few decades, could be an early warning system, sending us signals of the impending transition. The way to get through the difficult times that lie ahead – as the Hopi instruct us – is to reconnect with our inner Self and return to a life of simplicity, led in harmony with the Earth and all its creatures, with love for the Great Spirit and for one another. These messages are nothing new. They have been left behind by the sages and prophets of many cultures. But they acquire an additional degree of relevance and urgency as the end of the Fourth World and the Day of Purification draws near.

The Hopi prophecies, as we have noted, have been preserved in a fragmentary manner - as most oral traditions are – and it is only when we join together the bits and pieces of information coming from differerent sources does a rich tapestry begin to emerge. They tell us of two brilliant comets – a blue one and a red one – both of which may be part of comet swarms, that will usher in profound changes at the end of the Fourth World. This will be a time of global hostilities, when men will, yet again, bare their fangs and try to kill one another. The boundaries between the dimensions will dissolve and what has been denied and brushed under the carpet will be revealed for all to see. The Hopi believe that we are in the last days of the prophecy, although no-one knows the exact timings of these events. Given that some of the foretold events already appear to be underway, it seems that epochal changes lie in store for us in the not-too-distant future.
