A roundup of mysterious, paranormal and strange news stories from the past week.
Millionaire tech investor and futurist Herbert Sim of Mendlesham, Stowmarket, UK, sees enhancing humans with technology as a former sci-fi idea that is now only five years away and his new company called Neurochip is the place where this ‘transhumanism’ will become a reality; he says “Transhumanism can help to extend your life for 500 years” by upgrading humans into “mutants” by first using a helmet to read brainwaves and turn them into actions; he predicts that companies like Neurochip will unleash “possible superpowers that humans can have through the use of genetic technology” and turn them into mutants like the X-Men, leaving behind unenhanced humans because “they will not be able to contribute to society as effectively as these transhumans, and this is when humanity will then become obsolete”. The first thing he needs is some advanced transhumans who will protect his lab from the military and power-hungry politicians.
We’ve had celebrity UFO sightings and celebrity ghost stories, but this may be the first celebrity ‘alien big cat’ report - English singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran lives with his wife and children in a remote country estate in Suffolk near where one of his neighbors spotted a black panther-like cat pacing along the tree line on the edge of a field in the ton of Eye; the witness reported it to the Big Cats of Suffolk website along with photos and noted that they watched it for more than five minutes before it sat down with its head up; growling has been reported in the nearby village of Mendlesham; there have been previous big cat reports in Eye and Mendlesham and Suffolk is a known hotbed of ABC sightings; Sheeran was contacted but has not commented as of this writing. He’s probably checking to see if pumas eat redheads.
Smoke rings in the sky are generally explained as being made by cannons or fireworks, not aliens, but large smoke ring-like bubbles in the waters of oceans defied such clarification until recently when researchers from the SETI Institute (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) and the University of California-Davis made an in-depth study into the depths of the Pacific and determined that these bubble rings were created not by aliens but by humpback whales, and because the whales usually make them when interacting with humans, the researchers believe this is a form of inter-species communication developed by the humpbacks in the same way extraterrestrials might be sending specially-designed signals to our satellite receivers on Earth in hopes of making contact and communicating with us. If aliens decide the only way to communicate with us is with vortex bubbles, they have a pretty low opinion of our intelligence.
It’s crop circle season in the UK and Crop Circles From The Air recently posted videos of a Stonehenge 'Joker' Crop Circle next to the famous Bush Barrow and another in Avebury; meanwhile, the Wiltshire Police Department is asking residents and tourists to report them to the authorities because they cause "short and long-term damage to crops and fields" and are generally done by illegal trespassers who have been known to rob farm buildings; they inform landowners who find crop circles and don’t want visitors that they are responsible for posting plenty of “no public access signs” around them; those who don’t mind visitors are warned that they are responsible for health and safety on their land and should contact their insurer to see if they are covered. It was so much easier and a lot more fun when everyone believed they were made by aliens and stayed away.
The mysterious Buga sphere UFO – so named because it was spotted March 2 over the town of Buga, Colombia, by a man who found it on the ground and turned it over to scientists in Mexico for investigation – continues to baffle the researchers with its oddities; no one has yet been able to decipher the drawings etched on its silver metallic surface and the researchers have now revealed that the orb has become five times heavier than when it landed, leading them to propose it may use gravitational forces to make itself lighter in order to ascend; meanwhile back in Buga, the field where the sphere was found is now barren after the grass dehydrated and died - researchers from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) found no radiation and speculate some kind of invisible energy absorbed all of the water from the grass and soil; because controversial UFO researcher Jaime Maussan is involved, many are questioning the validity of the research and theories, but the involvement of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) gives it added credence. Did ‘The X-Files’ imitate life – or vice versa?
The Nebra sky disk was found near Nebra, Germany, in 1999 and the blue, green and bronze disk dates back to 1800–1600 BCE and shows what is believed to be the world’s oldest depiction of astronomical phenomena; no one has been able to determine how the foot-wide disk was made until recently when researchers from Otto-von-Guericke University in Magdeburg, Germany, the Saxony-Anhalt-State Museum of Prehistory, local engineering firm DeltaSigma Analytics and coppersmith Herbert Bauer joined forces to successfully replicate the processes that created the disk; they used energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and electron backscatter diffraction to determine that the it was probably forged from a pre-made form rather than cast from scratch, then heated and forged at least 10 times until reaching the state we’re familiar with today; then Bauer recreated the process and made a duplicate; in their paper, the researchers note how this sheds light on the remarkable metalworking ability of the prehistoric people who made the original. Our ancestors were smarter than they looked – are we?
Owners are generally not required by law to disclose that the house they are selling is haunted, but the ghost in an expensive house for sale in New Jersey was ‘exposed’ in the real estate listing when a relative of the owner spotted what appeared to be a foggy apparition in two photos of the home’s bar area and one with what looks like the entire body of a ghost sitting in a chair at the bar; the relative zoomed in on the photos to be sure before confronting the owner, who said they had no idea there was a ghost in the photo, let alone in the house; neither one says whether this is a real ghost photo, a camera glitch or a hoax perpetrated by the realtor to help sell the property, which is (as of this writing) off the market. Apparently, “For sale as is” means “as is” – no matter what the “as” is.
In March 2025, researchers led by radar specialist Filippo Biondi of the University of Strathclyde announced they had found what appears to be an underground city 2000 feet beneath the Pyramid of Khafre, the middle of the three Ancient Egyptian Pyramids of Giza; this was severely questioned by Dr. Zahi Abass Hawass, the renowned Egyptian archaeologist and former Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, and others; recently, the same team announced that their ground-penetrating radar had identified a second underground city underneath the Pyramid of Menkaure, the smallest of the three, with a “90 percent probability” that it “shares the same pillars as Khafre” and supports the idea that all three Biza pyramids sit on top of a single vast subterranean; Biondi claimed the pillars show identical geometry with spiral formations around them and a dense web of tunnels linking them; Hawass responded that ground-penetrating radar cannot image thousands of feet below the plateau and called this announcement “bulls***” – the same thing he said in March; Biondi says the team will release full tomography files “within months”. ‘Possible’ and ‘provable’ share many letters but are far from having the same meaning.
The Wall Street Journal has stepped out of its business reporting realm and joined the rest of the mainstream media in addressing the UFO phenomena with a new report confirming that the U.S. military has long used UFO stories to hide secret weapons programs; the article claims the Pentagon used fake photos and false UFO stories to mislead the public and conceal advanced projects such as stealth aircraft and other Cold War-era national security secrets; a congressionally-mandated Pentagon investigation, led by chief scientist Sean Kirkpatrick, confirmed this and showed it was also used to mislead foreign intelligence in the Soviet Union; the investigation points out that the famous 1967 incidents where nuclear missile launch systems were mysteriously disabled was not done by aliens in the flying saucers military personnel reportedly saw but by electromagnetic tests; however, some other media sites are questioning whether the story in the Wall Street Journal isn’t itself misinformation planted by the government. Robert Salas, the main witness who has been telling the story of the mysterious Minuteman missiles shutdown for years also issued a strong rebuttal demanding the truth from the Pentagon. What we need is a Google translator for military reports on UFOs.
We don’t get much Fortean news anymore but this is close enough –Jonathan Marlowe was playing disc golf with friends at the Splinter City Disc Golf Course in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, recently when a hammerhead shark fell from the sky; the shark looked to be about two feet long and was dead, so comparisons by media sites to the movie ‘Sharknado’ were unrealistic; Marlowe also shot down the Fortean ‘fish falling mysteriously from the sky’ references when he noted that this was the only shark that fell and he and his friends saw an osprey which was probably carrying the hammerhead for lunch when it was attacked by hungry crows with the same idea but less skill at catching them. Charles Fort’s ’Book of the Damned’ is over 100 years old but his phenomena still fascinate us.
The late NASA engineer Gilbert Levin declared in 1976 that he had discovered microbial life on Mars while working the Viking Mars landers mission, but NASA ran separate tests and said it had determined the soil did not show signs of life; Levin was convinced he was right until he died in 2021, even penning a paper in Scientific American defining and defending his evidence and analysis; now, his son Ron Levin, also an engineer, has taken up his father’s cause, saying fear of contamination and politics caused his father’s discovery to be suppressed and he wants NASA and SpaceX to re-run the experiment in preparation for the first manned mission to Mars in the 2030s (or earlier, if Elon Musk has his way); Ron says, “The smart thing would be to send my dad's new experiment back to Mars to check on it, see if it can repeat the result. I do believe, at a high level, NASA knows there is existent microbial life on Mars. Why they are withholding this fact I don’t know"; Ron Levin thinks his father’s mistake was saying at a news conference that he “thought it probably looks like life” instead of the more definitive “I discovered life on Mars”; he also suggests NASA’s reluctance is “a cover up for bacteriological warfare” and “We might want to go get Martian organisms and see if they're good for use on our enemies, and maybe that would be a reason for the government to keep it secret”. This all makes sense, yet even David Bowie could not convince NASA there was life on Mars.
In psychic prediction news, students of blind Bulgarian psychic Baba Vanga say the mysterious mystic predicted that in 2025 a “new light in the sky” would appear over a major sporting event being televised to the entire world and this UFO would be carrying extraterrestrials who would be in contact with humans for the first time in a meeting Baba Vanga said would bring answers, not fear to humanity; it didn’t happen during the Super Bowl in February, so it could be at the upcoming FIFA Women's World Cup, the FIFA Club World Cup or the Wimbledon tennis tournament; meanwhile, psychic and astrologer Inbaal Honigman predicted the breakup between U.S. President Donald Trump and his billionaire friend and advisor Elon Musk because "the clash between Trump and Musk is not really about policy, or about personal disagreements, but rather it is a popularity contest, with each of them wanting to be liked more than the other"; she now predicts that Trump will remove all traces of Musk from the White House and “it will be as if Musk was never in the White House in the first place. Even the DOGE office could be dissolved”; finally, she sees Trump bringing out his wife Melania more until he can find another “bro-panion”. Which would you rather see – aliens at Wimbledon or another bro-panion?
The ‘Gateway to Hell’ is an aptly named crater near Darvaza, Turkmenistan, which has been burning out of control since at least 1971; also known as the Shining of Karakum, it began as a natural gas field that collapsed – the cause is a mystery with some blaming nature while others say Soviet scientists punctured the natural gas cavern while drilling for oil and set it on fire to prevent poisonous gases from spreading; instead, the 230 foot wide by 98 foot deep Gateway to Hell has burned out of control ever since; in January 2022, President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow announced plans to extinguish the crater, but the crater remains open and burning and a famous, albeit hot and dangerous, tourist attraction; however, scientists now say a reduced flow of natural flammable gas has made the fires three times smaller than in the past and Irina Luryeva, a director at state-owned energy company Turkmengaz, said at a recent fossil fuel conference that the "Gateway to Hell" is disappearing and “only a faint source of combustion remains”; while it may no longer be Hell, the crater still leaks vast quantities of gas into the atmosphere. The three-fingered Peruvian mummies were in the news recently as further X-ray studies allegedly show that two females had claw and knife wounds which may have contributed to their deaths; now, Dr. David Ruiz Vela and journalist Jois Mantilla claim they took X-rays of a fetus inside the womb of the mummy named Montserrat which show she died 1,200 years ago while being about 30 weeks pregnant; Mantilla said the CT scans show the baby lying on its back with its head down near the belly and the mummy’s hands over it “as if she had wanted to protect her gestating belly”, noting that “The abdomen dried out, lost hydration, and became almost flat, but the hands remained in that position”; independent analysis outside of these and other scientists and journalists in Mexico have not been conducted on the mummies, leading many to believe they were made from human and animal parts as some have suggested. That still doesn’t explain why all have three fingers, so we’re still either fooled, uninformed or victims of a coverup.
In a ‘This could change everything’ archaeological announcement, an international team of researchers led by anthropologist Kim-Louise Krettek from the University of Tübingen in Germany used DNA from bones and teeth of 21 ancient hunter-gatherers in Checua, Colombia, to determine that this Indigenous group of Bogotá Altiplano people have a unique genetic lineage from 6,000 to 500 years ago which has been totally wiped out today; they are not related to any other ancient group in South America, nor do they share genetics with any North American groups; in the study, Krettek says “Our results show that the Checua individuals derive from the earliest population that spread and differentiated across South America very rapidly. We couldn't find descendants of these early hunter-gatherers of the Colombian high plains, the genes were not passed on. That means in the area around Bogotá there was a complete exchange of the population”; that means it is unknown how they got to South America or how or why they disappeared. It is stories like these that make it so important to ban the banning of history books and elevate archeology and other sciences in importance in schools before this knowledge, like the Checuans, is lost forever.
