Episode 605 – Mysterious Universe

This week we lead off with news that Darpa has lost yet another football over the neighbour’s fence, (a $380 million dollar stealth football that is), Seti has risen from the ashes, and new Submarine tech to take us deeper than ever before could be in civilian hands as early as next year.

Also featured is a Canine advisor to world leaders, real Cowboys and Aliens, and the duality of human consciousness revealed in NDEs.

You are forgiven, it was a good show :P

what’s the link for the dino guy? I think he might make a good birthday present….

Just a comment on Ben & Aaron’s comments on SETI:

There may be another reason why SETI is futile:

If there are extraterrestrial races abroad in the universe, consider this: the
universe is about 14 billion years old. Giving a (very) conservative margin of
error, let’s say it took about 5 billion years for the Universe to cool and
settle sufficiently for stars, planets and then life to form, that could mean
there could races out there that are 9 billion years old. Their capabilities
would be, as Arthur C Clarke put it, indistinguishable from magic.

At nine billion years old, the evolutionary advancement they would have over us
is comparable to that between us and an amoeba. These super advanced races
would very possibly have explored a good portion of the Universe. They may have
literally countless worlds under surveillance for scientific study – and be
able to ensure that an aggressive species does not reach a level where it can
be a threat to them or others.

A newly emerged race – such as us, perhaps – would in all likelihood be put under
quarantine to avoid cultural contamination (just like Star Trek’s Prime
Directive) with a policy of non-interference. By quarantine I mean that all
incoming communications from other races would be ‘jammed’, any younger, less
mature star-faring species would be prevented from any interference or even
    aggressive intentions.

These super advanced races’ science would be so mind bogglingly ahead of us
that we would have little to no inkling that we were under quarantine. The
jamming tech would either look like a natural phenomenon or be undetectable. It
would allow natural signals to penetrate our solar system, but signals from
intelligent races would be silently blocked. Perhaps signals from our own space
probes, like Voyager and Pioneer, would be allowed to reach us not matter how
far out they get, so we would never suspect.

Why block these signals? The answer is obvious: contained within those signals
would be descriptions of technologies far in advance of our own, technologies
that would be lethal in the hands of an immature species such as us. We still
murder each other in the name of religions and resources – would you allow
super technologies to fall into the hands of a species that has yet to master
    its primitive impulses?

This is all well and good, a sceptic would say, but is there any proof of this
quarantine? The answer is no, so admittedly right now it’s mere wild
    speculation.

Or is it? One could hypothesize that if we were under a communications
quarantine, one way to do it would be to envelop the emergent species’ system
in some kind of invisible ‘bubble’ of interference. As mentioned, when we
detected it, it would seem like a natural phenomenon, to hide the hand of those
    enforcing the quarantine.

Well, it turns out that scientists have indeed detected an bubble of unexpected
‘turbulence’ surrounding our solar system, that appears to be a natural solar
    phenomenon:

    http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2011/06/110609-magnetic-bubbles-solar-system-nasa-space-science/

Natural? Or evidence of a super science’s modification of our heliosphere? It
would be a clever way to create the quarantine without us suspecting it. It
would require a civilization able to operate on a staggering and cosmic scale -
but then, if these E.T.s are 9 billion years old…

Of course, this could be all paranoid nonsense, but what if…

Backwards: Yes, absolutely. It makes perfect sense that the soul/mind/consciousness would supersede the body. Not sure about all of those ‘New Age’ details (the specifics might be hard for us to discern while still physical), but still . . . Anyway, thanks for covering this book.

On a similar note, I was wondering if you could post the titles of the audible books you recommend. Thanks.

As a note on Al’s note: I tried to get that audible book that Aaron recommended a while back with Lucy in the title (couldn’t get it) – It turns out that some books aren’t sold here in the states that are sold in other countries. Something to do with the publishers only picking out certain areas for distribution and some legal crap (according to Audible.com). So if you can’t get a recommended book, thank the publishers and thank our idiot legal system!

I liked it too. I just went for the entertainment also. It wasn’t the best film but I thought it did the job (got me through a box of popcorn). The aliens looked a bit like the ones in Super 8 (kind of like an uncircumcised penis with a face).

I wondered if the same CGI company did the design work for both of them (haven’t found the particulars on that one yet). But that did happened with Battle LA from Sony. The CGI company, Hydraulx, got the job of doing the FX for Sony’s film and, according to Sony, Hydraulx then wrote and designed their own film, Skyline, with a similar premise and CGI designs as Sony’s. Hydraulx released Skyline late in the year before Battle LA and B LA was released the following year in March. Everyone thought that Battle LA was a sequel. I think the two are still in court.

Bridget saw a garbage truck hovering next to her trash can where she was trying to sleep one off. Anybody that knows LA would know that any 50 foot UFO hovering above Brentwood would gather a city sized crowd and be headline news instantly. LA doesn’t sleep.

The dog story: Makes me wonder if that was the catalyst for the book Ishmael. The premise is similar except Ishmael is an ape.
