Episode 602 – Mysterious Universe Plus+

We go Hog UFO hunting with the new Nat Geo show “Chasing UFOs” and hear from the hosts how awful their own show is before looking at new research on the science behind Karma. It seems we all have an intrinsic instinct to bargain with a universal force even if we don’t believe it exists.

Later twin telepathy is explored with a new book full of first hand accounts and the tail end of the show is rounded off with the usual sexiness you expect from Plus+.

Read on for show notes, music, and books.

There’s rumors Aaron may leave the show to look for Yowie in the Blue Mountains for a year. I know this because I started them.

Thanks so much for the shoutout, amigos. Just to chime in on a few things:

    * Indeed, Derenberger’s story is so fascinating because of all the uncommon details. For instance, Indrid Cold’s craft was not the typical saucer —Derenberger described it as something resembling a kerosene lamp placed horizontally instead of vertically.

    * Now that i think about it, you know who Indrid Cold reminds me of, with the grin and the pointy chin? Here, let me give you guys a hint:
    :P

Just a thought on the karma experiments … perhaps the participants were not so much “investing in karma” and only willing to do good deeds so that “the universe would return the favour”, but rather doing good deeds because they were more inclined to feel empathy with others as they were forced to reflect on their own problems or misfortunes.

The study. however, jumps to the conclusion that because participants were more willing to help others, that it must have been out of a selfish desire to get something back in return. Based solely on the results of the study, however, there seems to be no solid evidence to support this.

    Cheers
    Andrew

I think some scientists have proposed there’s a genetic desire for altruism in the human species, and that this altruism became a vital evolutionary advantage for Homo Sapiens.

You find that in the ancient cultures —specially the ones living in harsh conditions where resources are scarce, like the Bedu (Bedouins)— that social rules governing etiquette and hospitality are sacred. A Bedouin who has offered the sanctuary of his tent to a criminal cannot turn him to the hands of authority —why do you think Osama endured so long in the mountains of Afghanistan among the Pashtun?

It is thought that receiving a gift among our early ancestors formed an unsigned pact that the favor would be returned some day, and this assistance was what made our species so successful. Later we started to transfer our altruism not just to the members of our family or tribe, but to our neighbors and countrymen.

Our generation is witnessing the transfer of altruism to a global scale :)
