This week on Mysterious Universe we journey into The Fey with Kenny Klein and find some startling revelations on the true nature of Fairie Folklore.

We also look into extremely bold claims from CSETI that they have the first photograph of an Extraterrestrial, followed by tales of vanishing humans, exorcisms, and more humanoid and cryptid encounters.

Links, music, and video after the jump.

Hi Guys. Whenever I have trouble sleeping, I like to drift off while listening to my favorite podcasts. But imagine what it was like to be suddenly awakened by the horrific sounds of demonic possession! No more Mysterious Universe at bedtime!

    Great show!
  • Ben and Aaron. I'd read awhile back when researching a beer movie project called "Brew Day" ,that the Picts up in the Highlands were known for making a brew with ergot fungus that grew on the local heather plants and supposedly made them extra crazy fighters. Now, I couldn't imagine wanting to fight anyone on a psychodelic trip, but this is what I've read. Have you heard of this one? And thank you for the show. I always look forward to them. Although, I did have a UFO nightmare last night and I can't help but think it's because of all these reports. Even still, you guys rock. Favorite podcast.

That was very interesting. I've always been fascinated with the subject and have read a bit about faeries myself. I did want to share something. My wife is from a small village/town in Mexico called Tapalpa. Very beautiful place. My mother-in-law told me stories of "Chaneques" that are little people/faeries. The interesting thing is that when she described their behavior and antics they were almost exactly like the behavior of faeries in old English tales. For example that in farms they may help out in exchange for a little liquor and food left out for them. And if you break the agreement they will cause havoc in your farm. Also my brother-in-law had a near kidnapping by one of them. When he was about five years old he was playing by a creek at the same village. He looked up suddenly to see a little person. He beckoned him to follow him but he was too afraid and ran away. Keep up the great work guys.

    Great episode!.
I still haven't learned that it's dangerous to listen to your show when you're alone...talk about having a major case of the heebe jeebies!
Great interview with Kenny! I had a bit of a chuckle when he said he didn't believe in aliens, and then followed that with a serious, "don't drink the fairy beer"..
Keep up the excellent work! MU always gives me warm and fuzzies!

Wow. I thought you guys had quit after the episode 203 - because no new episodes would show up in my podcatcher. Suddenly today it displays a whole bunch of new episodes. Well, glad you're still here. I guess I have a lot of catching up to do... :)
  • You know you could've just checked our website
  • k235
I know, I dont know why I didnt think of that. Must be because I'm so used to "Podfade" in the podcasting world, I just assumed you guys fell victim to it as well. :) Like I said, Im glad that isnt the case :)

I've read all about the case of Annaliese previously, as I tend to do alot of that kind of research out of personal interest anyway - especially when they are cases that get hyped up and presented in Hollywood (like Amityville, Exorcist [which by the way I think is a hilariously awesome movie and have never found it in the least frightening], etc).

I had concluded from the materials that I had read that it was a sad case of a mentally ill girl that was abused to death through the exorcisms. Not that I don't believe in possession, just from what I had read it sounded pretty cut-and-dry that she had been ill, not possessed. Interesting that I had never run into info that talked of her actually receiving psychiatric care prior to the exorcisms commencing. I also had never heard that video before.

I have to say that in light of hearing that she had received psychiatric care, AND those recordings, I have tentatively changed my mind. I still would like to do more research on the case, and hope to find better resources than the ones I had encountered before!

Thanks for the great story. :)
  • i like that title "real alien" :))
if that's a real alien, then i'm a real blind seeing it.

Very enjoyable show and much less tinfoil hat feeling than last week's A Very Special Illuminatus Episode. ;)

I was quite amused by Aaron's disbelief that such poor writing would be done by a PhD level scientist. Apparently he's not on the receiving end of technical support emails from PhD level scientists. Most of them express no writing skills when composing emails. Misspellings, poor grammar and excessive mangling of punctuation is SOP for PhD, MDs and department heads (deans are often the ones with the best written emails since they have assistants). It's only grant proposals and papers for publication that they actually start giving a damn about writing. *ahem* Not that I'm buying the Heather story for a minute.

I've been impressed that stargates got mentioned two weeks in a row! Of course, that seems to be the term of the day or decade instead of "portal" or just plain "gate" which were in use back in the day before, well... before the release of Stargate and its subsequent spin-offs. I'm all for going back to using "portal" and "gate" minus the star myself. Hell, let's also ditch "dimensions" for "realms" too. If we're going Lovecraftian we should stick with Lovecraftian vocabulary.

Now THAT is a story I would love to hear you guys do. Tracking the use and evolution of popular science fiction, horror and fiction terminology in claims of supernatural and extraterrestrial experiences. Popular fiction informs SO many of those claims, and you guys have certainly touched on it in some of the better interviews.

Speaking of interviews, this week's was fantastic. And last week's was equally good.

Re fairies: most readers of fantasy novels are well aware of the darker nature of fairies. Terry Pratchett in particular portrays fairies as a brutally malevolent race. Jim Butcher's Dresden Files series also portrays fairies in a very similar dark manner but somewhat less malevolent. But it was great to hear Kenny talking about them.

BTW, guys, I am psyched about the Nazis on the moon! Explains a lot. A LOT! *grins*
  • Aron
Man,, thanks a lot Aaron! after listening to this episode, i went to get a bite,, and the fridge light is out.. You traveled to Southern California and not to Benjamin's.. you owe me a light bulb!
    Love the show btw!!
  • Also, wtf is my dads house doing on Mars?
  • Fantastic episode guys.

I agree with you guys in regards to the photo of the "alien". Looks a like a part of a tree to me honestly.

    Again, great ep :D
  • Personally that photo looks like one of those impressionist paintings that look like nothing except what you want it to look like.
  • Thanks Elliot. Also, cheers for the shout-out the other day on Pseudo Scientists!
  • Your welcome, should be out next week!
  • abeam
Ah, i'm reading my comment and must correct it. The reflection i mean is from the top of the craft. The top of the craft reflecting in the "shield" looking like a false horizon. Phew... : ) Yeah, my english is a little rusty.
  • abeam
Hey MU, i have an possible explanation for the mars structure. It looks like a sunshield reaching into the image from the top. It reminds me of "french flag" commonly mounted on a matte box which is a part you need for professional cinematography. The structures one might see could be reflections from the bottom of the craft itself. Cheers! Philipp.
